Undergrads

Background

Undergraduates play a vital role in academic research and conversely research provides students with practical experience applying the ideas they learn in class.  Doing research with a professor is the best way to gain confidence in your education in preparation for your career.  The type of research an undergraduate can do dpeends on his/her intellectual maturity, coursework, and time availability.  The first job usually involves simpler repetitive tasks that require relatively little training, which could be serving as a field or lab assistant, or processing data in a spreadsheet.  Eventually a student is ready to take on intermediate level work, such as GIS-based mapping and geospatial data analysis. For a few elite students, it is possible to take on a project of your own and eventually write a peer reviewed journal article communicating your work to the full scientific community.
