Past Service

My complete record of service on behalf of University of California

I have always believed in pro bono service to the community, and since UC has been my primary community for my professional career, I do a lot of service to benefit and sustain campus life. Below I organize my service from the most local level within the hydrology program in my deparment to the broadest regional level across all UC campuses. I do not do services at all levels all at the same time, but over the years I have shifted around to provide service at different levels where I think I can make a meaningful contribution or where I am requested to serve.

The highlight of my past service was certainly serving as chair of the UC Davis Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility.  In that role I defended the academic freedom of several individual faculty members, even in the face of imappropriate aggressive behavior and strong opposition from high-level administrators.  In that role I also spearheaded the largest expansion in academic freedom in the history of the UC system.  It took four years, but in July 2013 the UC Regents approved the reform.  All previous notions of academic freedom limited the application of the idea to just one's area of scholarship.  Prior to this, the biggest change was to no longer require "dispassionate" scholarship.  However, academic freedom is no longer shackled to scholarship.  UC faculty are now free to speak on all institutional matters, whether they are within our sphere of scholarship or not.  We may do so using any forum or medium.
